Oct 30, 2026

Credit card debt is becoming an increasingly serious financial challenge for individuals and families throughout Monroe County. Hundreds of credit card debt lawsuits are filed each month, reflecting the growing financial pressures many households are facing.

In this News10NBC investigative report, Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean examines the growing number of credit card lawsuits in Monroe County and the amount of debt behind them. His investigation found that more than $1.3 million in unsecured debt was represented in lawsuits filed over just four days.

Karyn Rando, Director of Counseling Operations at Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Rochester (CCCS), shares insight into what these numbers mean for local residents. From rising credit card balances to the financial stress that comes with collection lawsuits, Karyn explains what counselors are seeing firsthand and why many people are struggling to keep up.

As the report highlights, credit card debt isn't always the result of overspending. Unexpected expenses such as car repairs, medical bills, and utility costs can quickly put families in a difficult financial position.
