A new law in New York State will prohibit most employers from using credit history in hiring decisions, removing a barrier that has often affected job seekers with financial challenges. According to Karyn Rando of the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Rochester, this change will help more applicants be considered based on their skills rather than past credit issues.
There are exceptions for certain roles, including law enforcement, financial positions, jobs involving sensitive information, or those requiring high security clearance. Employment attorney Jared Cook advises employers to update hiring practices and ensure compliance, especially with background check providers.
While credit history will no longer be used for most hiring, experts note it’s still important for individuals to monitor and manage their credit.
